a. How was Mr. Collins' childhood?
Mr. Collins' childhood wasn't pleasant under the guidance of his illiterate and miserly father, which hindered his education and social interactions.

b. How did Mr. Collins' father influence him?
Although Mr. Collins' father influenced him to be humble and well-mannered, he (his father) provided him with little education. Not only did this contribute to Mr. Collins' lack of common sense, but he also failed to form beneficial social connections.

e. What ideas about society might the author be expressing through Mr. Collins?
Through Mr. Collins, the author might be expressing social hypocrisy. Mr. Collins' outward humility and respect toward high ranks may mask his actual feelings of pride and self-importance. It depicts that in society, people with authority sometimes act in certain ways to gain favor, even though it contradicts their true beliefs or values.
