               SUMMARY OF THE POEM

In the poem "Crossing the Bar" the poet talks about death and the journey into the afterlife. Here, he uses symbols from nature like sunset, evening star, sea, tide, foam, twilight, evening bell, and flood to explain his feelings and ideas. Besides, if you read carefully, you can understand that like others, the poet also expresses his desire to cross the bar between life and death without sorrowful farewells. The poem accepts the truth that we have to leave this world, and he wishes to be calm and peaceful

'ক্রসিং দ্য বার' কবিতায় কবি মৃত্যু ও পরকালের যাত্রার কথা বলেছেন।এখানে, তিনি তার অনুভূতি এবং ধারণাগুলি ব্যাখ্যা করতে সূর্যাস্ত, সন্ধ্যার তারা, সমুদ্র, জোয়ার, ফেনা, গোধূলি, সন্ধ্যার ঘণ্টা এবং বন্যার মতো প্রকৃতির প্রতীকগুলি ব্যবহার করেন। এছাড়া, মনোযোগ দিয়ে কবিতাটি পড়লে বোঝা যায়, অন্যদের মতো কবিও দুঃখের বিদায় ছাড়া জীবন-মৃত্যুর মধ্যবর্তী সীমা অতিক্রম করার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করেছেন।আমাদের এই পৃথিবী ছেড়ে চলে যেতে হবে এই সত্যকে কবিতাটি উপলব্ধি করে এবং তিনি যখন মৃত্যুর মুখোমুখি হবেন, তখন তিনি নির্মল ও শান্তিপূর্ণ থাকার ইচ্ছা পোষণ করেন।

a) What is the poem about?

The poem "Crossing the Bar" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson is about the theme of death and the poet's contemplation of his own mortality. The poem reflects the peaceful transition from life to death which is the inevitable journey from life to death.

আলফ্রেড, লর্ড টেনিসনের "ক্রসিং দ্য বার" কবিতাটি মৃত্যুর বিষয়বস্তু এবং তার নিজের মৃত্যু সম্পর্কে কবির চিন্তাভাবনা নিয়ে। কবিতাটি জীবন থেকে মৃত্যুর শান্তিপূর্ণ উত্তরণকে প্রতিফলিত করে যা জীবন থেকে মৃত্যুর অনিবার্য যাত্রা।

b) Have you found any symbols in the poem? If yes, what are those?

Yes, there are several symbols in the poem. Some of these are as follows:

Sunset : Symbolize the end of life.

Evening star : advance age and last time of the speaker

Sea and tide: Represent the journey into the afterlife.

Foam: Signifies turbulence in the passage.

Twilight : Indicate the approach of darkness and the end of the day, 

Clear call : reminder of upcoming death

Evening bell : death bell, a sound that reminds the speaker it's time to go

Bar : the boundary between life and death

Tide : experience of dying, moving calmly and securely

Boundless : Ocean, i.e. eternity

Dark : death

Embark : leaving the land of living and heading off the afterlife

c) What do the symbols 'sunset and evening' and 'clear call' mean in the poem?

In the poem, "sunset and evening" represent the end of the day. It metaphorically means the end of life. Just like the day comes to an end when the sun sets, life has its end too.

"Clear call" refers to a summons or invitation. It symbolizes death or the afterlife. It's like someone or something is calling the person to move on to a new phase or realm. The poet expresses a desire for a peaceful journey when crossing the metaphorical bar between life and death without sorrowful farewells.

কবিতায়, "সূর্যাস্ত এবং সন্ধ্যা" দিনের শেষের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করে। রূপকভাবে এর অর্থ জীবনের শেষ। সূর্য অস্ত গেলে যেমন দিন শেষ হয়ে যায়, তেমনি জীবনেরও শেষ আছে।

"ক্লিয়ার কল" একটি সমন বা আমন্ত্রণকে বোঝায়। এটি মৃত্যু বা পরকালের প্রতীক। এটি এমন যে কেউ বা কিছু ব্যক্তিকে একটি নতুন পর্যায়ে বা রাজ্যে যাওয়ার জন্য ডাকছে। দুঃখজনক বিদায় ছাড়া জীবন ও মৃত্যুর মধ্যকার রূপক দণ্ড অতিক্রম করার সময় কবি একটি শান্তিপূর্ণ ভ্রমণের আকাঙ্ক্ষা ব্যক্ত করেন।

d) Do you think symbol helps the poet express his ideas in a better way? If yes, explain with an example.

Yes, symbols help the poet express his thoughts in an evocative way by adding depth and making things clearer. Symbols simplify complex concepts, allowing the poet to convey deeper meanings more effectively. The metaphorical symbols enrich the poem. For example, when the poet talks about "the bar," it's like a line between life and whatever comes after. This symbol makes it easier for readers to understand the idea of a boundary or transition between life and death.
